I created my first Mixbook Photo Co. product last year as a Christmas gift to myself, my mother, sister, and grandmother. When word got out to my extended family members and my mother's siblings, the family rushed to order a copy! I was delighted to have created a keepsake recipe book that I could share with all of them and be passed down to the next generations.

Creating this little treasure was therapeutic, sitting down with a cup of coffee, reading through my moms', grandmothers', or my grandmother's mothers' hand writing to convert it to the cookbook. Remembering all the times we would make these recipes and the stories behind them. For instance, a beloved recipe in this cook book is the "Minman's Whoopie Pies". These decadent chocolate cookies with a marshmallow cream center have always been baked by my mother for family reunions in the summer or brought to our large family Christmas gatherings. My mom told me stories about how her brothers would hate that their mother called them "Whoopie Pies" and begged her not to call them that around friends. I remember when people never heard of a Whoopie Pie and now you can find them in the grocery store being called "Gobs". What in the world is a "gob"? haha.
How to Create a Cookbook using a Mixbook Photo Book:
First let's head over to Mixbook, hover over photobook, and select recipe/cookbooks tab. Mixbook currently has 10 premade templates to choose from to create a cookbook. These premade templates are 100% customizable and you could even strip it down to bare pages to make it however you want it! They even have a template made by Magnolia Bakery!
Once you have a chosen a template, you will be taken to the editorial studio to create your masterpiece! The program will have step by step pop up guides to help you as you create the book. As I said before, it's pretty simple to use. Upload some photos, pick a layout, add a background if you want, stickers if you wish, and then finish it off with text! You can add pages as you go, but most templates will give you 20-30 pages to start with. There are so many beautiful backgrounds to scroll through and it's tempting to not use them all! The stickers add fun details to your book, a pot, a clock, a pretty floral scroll detail- whatever you want! This is your book!
When you're ready, you can order your creation! The photo books come in sizes ranging from 6x6, 8.5x8.5, 10x10, and 12x12. You'll then be asked to pick your paper finish. I went with the semi-gloss and I love it! The last step is to pick the type of style cover. Softcovers are a flexible glossy paper that can be wiped. There is also hardcovers and even leather cover options (obviously with upcharges).

What You'll Find In My Cook Book
When I started to create my cook book, it was nearing Christmas of last year. I wanted to write down my mom's Cranberry Jell-O Salad recipe on a recipe card. I stopped over one day and discovered her only recipe for it was on a old, yellowing, magazine cut out from decades ago. This recipe was on a piece of paper no bigger then 3x4 inches; maybe even smaller. How she hasn't lost it yet is incredible! haha.
It got me thinking that we really need to create a book to compile all these cherished recipes in and something we didn't have to go hunting for when we wanted the recipe. That's how this all got started.
The first section of my cook book covers all our traditional Christmas dishes we would make. Breakfast Casserole, Cheesy Hash-brown Potatoes, and Cinnamon Roll Casserole to name a few. Then my mom suggested we added in some of our favorite side dishes too. I sorted through my moms' recipe box to find a bunch of cookies and desserts my grandma would make her kids, our traditional gingerbread, and sugar cookies we make at Christmas, and some of my own recipes that have become very well loved. We ended the cookbook with two soup recipes and a special note on the back cover.
It was a collected of our most loved recipes. My mom and I want to create a second book with more of my grandmothers' mothers' recipes! A truly incredible keepsake cookbook that includes recipes and images of the recipe cards written in my great grandmother's hand writing; dating back to the early 1920's!!!! I love history. I'm very excited to work on that next cook book and may even create a cook book with a lot of our favorite dinner recipes. Sometimes, even I get tired of searching my Pinterest board for the recipe I pinned.
