Who Lit The Black Flame Candle Craft

Hocus Pocus is my favorite Halloween Movie and every Halloween I get inspired by the witchy decor for decorating our home. This Black Flame Candle craft is easy and adds a touch of spooky to your home decor.

I made a bunch of these candles about 5 years ago. Which is pretty impressive that they have held up so well. They have been stored outside in sheds, inside in attics, have survived moving to a new house, and being used for the last several years! That's just a bunch of Hocus Pocus! hehe.

In all seriousness, these candles are just too easy to make, add a touch of spooky to your home, and last quit a while! The best part is they're cheap to make! If you're an avid crafter, then you will most likely have a lot of the supplies already. You may only need to buy a couple of items. For someone who doesn't craft often, this is still a really cheap craft that adds a lot of interest to your Halloween decor without breaking the bank. Instagram Reel Tutorial Here.

What You Need:

  • toilet paper roll or paper towel rolls (both to add height and/or clusters)

  • hot glue gun

  • lots of glue gun sticks

  • a paint brush

  • black acrylic paint

  • tape- any kind will do.

  • tea light candle- battery operated. (black works best but can buy any color and paint candle black).

Instructions:

  1. Gather your supplies and decide how many candles you can or want to create! Determine if you will create single candle sticks, clusters, or both!

  2. Take your tape and create an X that will go inside one opening of the paper roll. This will create a "hammock" for the tea light to sit down inside the paper towel roll. Use enough tape to allow the candle to sit flush with the top opening of the paper roll. Adjust tape as needed; this may take a couple tries to get right. Once you have the adjustments right, press the tape onto the paper roll. It is okay if tape shows on the outside, we will be covering this up.

  3. Once your hot glue gun is warmed up, start piping drip runs on your candle. Starting from the top down. Create small drips and long drips all the way around the candle. Allow time for it to dry. Then keep adding layers of varying drip lengths on top of the others. This will create a more realistic drip effect. Just like an actual wax candle.

  4. Once all the hot glue has dried, take your brush and paint on the black paint all over the paper roll and hot glue. Make sure you get into all the cracks and layers of the hot glue. Make sure your candle is evenly covered with black paint.

  5. Allow paint on paper roll to dry. If you are using a white candle, you can use black acrylic paint to cover it up and make it black. Just paint a couple coats of black all over the white tea light candle. Avoid getting paint on the flames.

  6. Once everything has dried, you can drop your tea light candle into the opening and enjoy your spooky Black Flame Candle. If you are making clusters, just pipe hot glue along one side of a paper roll and stick it to another paper roll. I liked using one tall paper towel roll and two little toilet paper rolls to create groups of three. These looked very nice amongst my decor.
